If you're anything like me, a Disney-loving, pop culture-obsessed mum who holds her childhood films close to her heart, then you’ve probably been nervously excited about the new Lilo & Stitch live-action remake. I walked into it clutching my nostalgia like a prized plush, and I walked out having laughed, cried… and died of the absolute adorableness of the little actress who played Lilo (Maia Kealoha).
Let me just say this: she is Lilo. Every scene she was in stole the show. Her line delivery, the sass, the sweetness.
Yes, I laughed. Stitch’s chaotic antics were delightfully over-the-top, and the chemistry between the characters felt authentic. The live-action visuals gave the story a fresh energy, but the soul of the original? Still there, loud and proud.
Yes, I cried. I forgot how much this story hits you right in the feels. Themes of family, loss, belonging… they're as powerful today as they were 20 years ago. And seeing them portrayed with real people? That just added an emotional gut-punch I wasn't prepared for (I was glad I wore my new Sandra Glynn waterproof mascara).
And yes, I died of the adorableness. There’s something about seeing Lilo brought to life her big heart, those Hula moves, that made me want to hug her!
Would I recommend it?A hundred times YES. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or introducing your kids to Lilo and Stitch for the first time, this live-action version could possibly be Disney's best!
